Some Habitants abandoned their farms because they found out that the fur trade was easier to make a living out of.
Habitants farmed on seigneuries, and the seigneurs owned that land. The Habitants had to build their own houses, farm and prepare the land.
Farming satisfied their own needs, they would not sell their farm products
SEIGNEURS
Seigneurs were the people who owned the seigneuries, and they were also called landlords.
