- Even after the government made it illegal they still did it
Merchants
- Their Businesses were Blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers, and butchers
- They would import goods from France and trade with First Nations
- The furs that they got from the First Nations, then shipped to France and sold them
Voyageurs
- They were men from New France who travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts
- The word voyageur means "Traveller"

- These were the people who worked on the land
- They were peasants who didn't own anything
- They owed the seigneurs work days every year
Seigneurs
- They received the land as a grant from the King of France
- Their job was to recruit settlers to work on their land
- They were responsible for building a house for themselves, a flourmill, and a church for the habitants
