Nervous system Eric Hernandez P1
Major functions of the
nervous system
To collect sensory input from the body and external environment.
To process and interpret the sensory input.
To respond appropriately to the sensory input.
Major divisions and subdivisions of the nervous system
central nervous system (CNS)-The central nervous system (CNS) controls most functions of the body and mind. It consists of two parts
peripheral nervous system (PNS)-is one of two components that make up the nervous system of bilateral animals, with the other part being the central nervous system.
Major part of the brain and
their functions
cerebrum-s the largest part of the brain and is composed of right and left hemispheres. It performs higher functions like interpreting touch, vision and hearing, as well as speech, reasoning, emotions, learning,
brainstem-controls the flow of messages between the brain and the rest of the body, and it also controls basic body functions such as breathing, swallowing, heart rate, blood pressure, consciousness,
cerebellum-receives information from the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brain and then regulates motor movements.
Names of all the lobes and their functions
frontal lobe- is the part of the brain that controls important cognitive skills in humans,
temporal lobe- is located behind your ears and extends to he temporal lobe is involved in vision, memory, sensory input, language, emotion, and comprehension.
occipital lobe- is the visual processing area of the brain. It is associated with visuospatial processing, distance and depth perception, color determination, object and face recognition, and memory formation.
parietal lobe -is at the back of the brain and is divided into two hemispheres.
layers of the meninges
dura mater -is a membrane that envelops the arachnoid mater. It surrounds and supports the dural sinuses (also called dural venous sinuses, cerebral sinuses,
pia mater is to protect the central nervous system by containing the cerebrospinal fluid
Arachnoid mater: Connected to the dura mater on the side closest to the CNS,
Classification of neurons
sensory neurons -nerve cells within the nervous system responsible for converting external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses.
A motor neuron (or motoneuron) is a neuron whose cell body is located in the motor cortex, brainstem or the spinal cord,
interneurons-are neurons that are found exclusively in the central nervous system
Major parts and functions of the spinal cord
It connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain
Information (nerve impulses) reaching the spinal cord through sensory neurons are transmitted up into the brain.
Drugs that affect the brain
Marijuana.
Heroin and Prescription Opioids.
Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and Other Stimulants.
Benzodiazepines.
Ecstasy.
LSD, PCP, Ketamine, and Hallucinogens.
