Narrative style
Point of view - First person, third person
Themes e.g. Pride, identity, life experiences
Some have little to no narration
Theme styles - Frame of meaning creates different styles e.g. Parallel or contrasting frames
The "story" of the piece
Same story can be told in many different forms
Figurative Style
Metaphor, simile, allegory, allusion, anthropomorphism
Some are literal some are figuative
Different genres use figurative language differently
Signing and Performance Style
Vocabulary choices mark styles clearly
Established lexicon - purpose to tell
Productive lexicon - purpose to show
Scholarly styles - more formal
Colloquial styles - least formal
Examples: Manipulating lexical signs, patterns of repetition, manipulating sublexical features, short or long segments of vocabulary, complex visual images.
