Energies
Vocabulary
-
-Thermal Energy: kinetic energy, as it is due to the motion of particles, with motion

-
-
-Catalyst: a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without permanent chemical change

Exothermic
Heat is given, Exothermic releases heat energy to its surroundings, the surroundings temperature increases, but returns to room temperature later.
Examples: Burning fuels, Combustion of fuels, Denotation of explosives, reaction of acids with metals.
-
Endothermic
Heat is taken out, and takes in heat energy from the surroundings, the surroundings temperature decreases, the temperature returns later.
More supplied than is released, heat energy is returned to get back to room temperature.
First energy must be supplied to break bonds, then energy is released when new bonds are made.
How state of matter affects the rate of reaction? Increasing the surface area of the solid-phase reactant increases the number of collisions per second and therefore increases the reaction rate.
-
How Pressure affects the rate of reaction? When you increase the pressure, the molecules have less space in which they can move. That greater density of molecules increases the number of collisions.
How surface area affects the rate of reaction? Increasing the surface area of a solid reactant exposes more of its particles to attack
How Concentration affects the rate of reaction? When the concentration of a reactant decreases, there are fewer of that molecule or ion present, and the rate of reaction decreases
How catalysts and inhibitors affect rate of reaction? Catalyst increases the reaction rate by lowering the activation energy for a reaction, Enzyme Inhibitors reduce the rate of an enzyme catalyzed reaction by interfering with the enzyme in some way
