How to spend less time on social media
Determine if social media impacts your life negatively by asking these questions:
Do you feel a change in mood after using social media?
Do you compare yourself to others on social media often?
Does seeing other's success through social media affect how you feel about yourself?
Do you feel addicted to social media? That is, do you feel checking social media apps to be out of your control?
Does it affect your productivity?
Does social media distract you often?
Does social media benefit you or negatively impact you the most?
Do you often feel envious of other's posts on social media? How does this impact your own self esteem?
Does social media every make you feel lonely/isolated/left out?
Check your screen time through the settings app on your phone
Open settings on your phone
Go to "Screen Time"
Observe how long you spend on social media apps. Which apps are used the most? Are you shocked at the average time spent looking at your screen? This will prompt your social media break even more by becoming aware of what makes you happy and what is unnecessary.
Determine which apps you want to take a break from (either by answering the questions or looking at the screen time)
Either delete the app completely
Or decrease the amount of time you spend on it, which can be tracked on screen time settings on your phone
Set goals for limiting screen time - you can do this in the actual app by limiting specific apps and providing yourself restrictions
Engage in activities that you would normally do if you weren't on your phone.
Spend time with friends and family
Engage in activities such as: hobbies, sports, concerts, trips
Do some activities that you used to do when you were younger/things you don't have time for anymore.
Revisiting these can be a good way to realize that social media was replacing things you once loved.
This also makes taking a break from social media/spending less time on it beneficial and enjoyable
Reflect on your time without certain social media apps
Do you feel better spending less screen time?
Do you feel more productive in your work?
Do you have more time for important in person experiences and relationships?
Did you successfully reach your goals of less screen time? How difficult was it?
Write down in a planner or notebook your screen time goals and when you have succeeded them.
Write down productive activities to replace with too much screen time
Writing goals down will help yourself be accountable of these goals and whether you feel successful in completing them.
Determine what's realistic to delete from your life (certain apps) and determine which apps actually don't negatively impact your life.
