- - - - No Name Woman (Story 1) - describes the story of an aunt named aunt Kingston that the protagonist was never allowed to talk about because she had brought shame her family's name due to having an illegitimate child (one born out of wedlock). The aunt then killed herself and her child by committing suicide in a well.
        
        White Tiger (Story 2) talks about a legendary female warrior that trains extremely hard and begins to lead an army of men at the age of seven to fight against corrupt aristocrats. This story very clearly contrasted with Maxine Hong Kingston's life in the United States when she can almost not even confront her racist bosses. However, unlike the female warrior, Kingston realizes that her weapons were hidden inside her the whole time (words).
        
        Shaman (Story 3) focuses on Maxine Hong Kingston's mother and how her mother would tell her stories of Chinese babies being abandoned or being sold into slavery. In the end, it is revealed that Maxine and her mother, Brave Orchid, reconcile their differences and spend some quality time with one another.
        
        At the Western Palace (Story 4) - This story tells another of Kingston's mother's story. Moon Orchid (Kingston's Mother's Sister) had married a successful doctor but the husband left her behind in China and remarried in America. Moon Orchid as a result ventures to America and is therefore left to fend for herself without the knowledge of how to use english. All this pressure drives her to madness and she is forced to live out the rest of her life in a California mental asylum.
        
        A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe (Story 5) - This story is very personal to Kingston and is a story on how becomes frustrated at herself and others due to her continual but failing efforts at always pleasing her mother. Eventually, her frustrations reach a climax and she erupts in anger at her mother. Later down in life, these emotions are expressed in her mother's stories and Kingston begins to appreciate the lore the her mother tells of.
- - - - Major Connection:
        The Aptness of Anger and Beyond Anger are written by two different well respected authors. Nussbaum preaches that anger can be used as a tool to express oneself and gain attention but at the cost of significant damage. She also preaches that anger can be used as a learning experience. Srinivasan preaches that anger is extremely counter-productive because it can lead to a situation becoming more complex as a result of the use of anger. Both texts believe that anger has the potential to cause significant damage but one Srinivasan believes that anger will almost always be counterproductive while Nussbaum believes there is the potential of growth from anger.
      - Major Connection: Nussbaum believes that although anger almost always leads to significant damage, there is a potential learning experience. In Twilight Los Angeles, the learning positive experience is revealed as the McCone Commission is pressured into improving the conditions of the black ghettos and narrowing the disparity between the white community and black community.
