Safe Injection Sites
Safe injection sites reduce the rate of drug overdoses by administering safe amounts of drug dosage per person. This way there is a lesser chance of overdosage, hospitalization, and potential death. There are also trained professionals present during the injection process, that are trained to intervene in attempted overdosage or are prepared to respond immediately in the event of an overdose (“Supervised Consumption Sites”).

Safe injection sites will not only reduce drug overdose related deaths and fewer hospitalizations, but also reduce spreading diseases such as HIV, which are commonly spread by unsterilized needles. Diseases such as HIV are commonly spread by needles that were unsterilized after usage. When these unsterilized needles are re-injected into another person’s bloodstream, it can potentially be carrying diseases, such as HIV. Safe injection sites are made so that individuals can receive their injectable drugs safely, with sterilized needles (“Safe Injection Sites: Are They Helping or Hurting?”). These sterilized needles will reduce the chances of contracting diseases such as HIV.

Safe injection sites are clinic-like medical facilities, that are for individuals who would like to be administered narcotics or other drugs such as opioids. In the United States, the average amount of people who die of overdose of injectable drugs on a daily basis is 130 (“Opioid Overdose Crisis”). Safe Injection sites work under an exemption by Health Canada, which follows the federal drug laws of Canada (“Supervised Consumption Sites”). There are currently 100 safe injection sites around the world, to date.(“What's The Evidence That Supervised Drug Injection Sites Save Lives?”). While 100 doesn’t sound like a large number when talking about a global impact, these facilities are making quite an impact to the communities that need them.
