In all of these novels the characters have had an identity crisis and some of the characters held themselves accountable and were more aware after that or protective of their energy opposed to others in order to reach the goal they were striving for even if it wasn't viewed as the most popular goal.
Masculinity began to become challenged in all of these stories which showed that the men in most of the stories had a fragile masculinity due to the insecurity they had due to the lack of knowing the power they actually had, this led to them acting off of emotions rather than their reactions being rational.(Walter from "A Raisin In The Sun" almost put his family's desires in risk to prove a point to others that he could reach the American Dream until it came to him realizing he was the role model for his son.(He declined the offer due to him realizing it wasn't the most rational thing to do, and that money shouldn't tear him.(Knew his true American Dream and didn't fully fold on it).
. Tim , the main character in "The Things They Carried" wanted to please everyone so he went to war even though he didn't want to so that he could avoid the shame of everyone. Due to Tim doing this he went through a challenge that altered his mental health drastically , but he continued to cope so that he could make his way through. This shows that because he was more worried about what everyone else would think he suffered way more than he ever would have suffered if he received shame from everyone.
"I was no solider. I hated boy scouts.I hated camping out. I hated dirt, tents , and mosquitoes" (39).
Symbols: All of the characters blinded themselves of their burdens with coping mechanisms which means that without the coping mechanisms they would fall for more things because each one loss their innocence and had a mind shift when they fell into war which made them start to lose themselves and the only thing that held them together and the remembrance of themselves were the coping mechanisms so they wouldn't be completely be drifted away from everything due to war.
.The main character Blanche in "A Streetcar named Desire" was very insecure to the point where she created a whole new persona when she moved in with her sister. Her previous persona was destroyed due to her dealings with many men ..young and old and she destroyed her new persona the same way by letting the habits she created become a part of her personality. She was very easy to persuade and she was easy to manipulate, all someone needed to do was compliment her , regardless of it was genuine or not didn't matter..they would still get what they want. (Her synthetic persona was based mainly off of materialistic things.)
"She has decked herself out in a somewhat soiled and crumpled white satin evening gown and a pair of scuffed silver slippers with brilliants set in their heels. Now she is placing the rhinestone tiara on her head before the mirror of the dressing-table and murmuring excitedly as if to a group of spectral admirers"(Scene Ten Stage Directions). This shows that her new synthetic persona was crumbling and relates to the idea of how if you don't know your worth or stand for anything you will fall for everything... she proves this by being so submissive to men. (Materialistic things cannot make happiness if you aren't content with yourself).
Symbols: Blanche : She also connects to Walter from "A Raisin In The Sun" with the idea that Materialistic things rule everything and is all guilty of letting high powered people or people with materialistic things have a great amount of power over her. The Clothing she wears also connects to the idea of standing for nothing and falling for anything because she does not dress to impress herself like she should since she is the only person she truly has to live with for the rest of her life.... she dresses to impress everyone else(mainly men) and to make women envious
. Walter the main character in "A Raisin in the Sun" had a mindset that was mainly based around money being the remedy for every problem that him and his family faced. This led him to almost give up everyone else's version of the American Dream just to pursue his. This Demonstrates how he was so money hungry that he put the dreams of everyone he loved on the line to grasp his own. (Didn't realize the love everyone else had for him no matter how much or how little he had that unintentionally pushed them away due to money having so much power over him"
"No- it was always about money"(Hansberry,Act1,Scene2,74.)

Beneatha: The intelligence of it all, and the answer to the American dream. (If you truly understand you can grasp the American Dream if you redefine it and make it your own then you won't fall for anything."
. In this story many insecure people brought their insecurities onto others. Janie was the main character and she was constantly put through rough times despite her three marriages. She was always manipulated due to her not having wealth and not being able to provide for herself due to the loss of her provider(her grandmother) and the boy she truly loved not being able to provide financially. She was taken advantage of physically due to her being hit on by two of her husbands and she stayed longer than her mental health could take due to the fear of loosing her stability that she had from them. She was very intelligent and ambitious however she was always belittled which made her start to question her worth however she eventually regained all of her power back once she learned her worth.
"Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a woman"(Hurston 25).
Symbols:Janie represented strength , she learned her worth along the way, but at the time when all the mental and physical abuse was happening she didn't know how to leave. She Connects to Stella from "A StreetCar named Desire"
The Pear tree appeared more than once/ the subject of the pear tree which shows that it was the goal she had to reach.
Thematic Statement: "If you lack the knowledge of your worth and stand for nothing, you will fall for anything".
