      - "Try as she might, she could never get her eyes to disappear...As long as she looked the way she did, as long as she was ugly, she would have to stay with these people. She belonged to them. Long hours she sat looking in the mirror, trying to discover the secret of the ugliness that made her ignored or despised at school, by teachers and classmates alike," (45).
      - The hatred of the white dolls by the narrator ---> symbolizes how she doesn't understand why that is the standard for beauty in the society; questions why is white the desired look
    - - "They go to land-grant colleges, normal schools, and learn how to do the white man's work with refinement: home economics to prepare his food; teacher education to instruct black children in obedience; music to soothe the weary master and entertain his blunted soul. Here they learn the rest of the lesson begun in those soft house with porch swings and pots of bleeding heart: how to behave. The careful development of thrift, patience, high morals, and good manners. In short, how to get rid of the funkiness. The dreadful funkiness of passion, the funkiness of nature, the funkiness of the wide range of human emotions," (83)
      - Another example: how Geraldine raised her song Junior. She eradicated all remnants of their blackness that was considered improper (ie. she didn't let him play with African American children, only white children, and she dressed him in the nicest clothes).
      - "Wherever it erupts, this Funk, they wipe it away; where it crusts, they dissolve it; wherever it drips, flowers, or clings, they find it and fight it until it dies," (83) ---> this talks about what happens when white people see "the other" or that which is different from them. White people expect minorities to assimilate, and break their culture when they don't.
  - - - Despite there being many negative effects to "The Sunken Place," there is the positive effect of coming into solidarity with each other, having gone through similar experiences. All of the black characters help Chris ultimately escape from the estate at the end of the movie, by helping realizing just how had things are (Ie. Logan saying "Get Out," Walter and Georgina being on the verge of crying when talking about their experiences with the Armitages)
  - - - "Once this disease is contracted, one can never really be carefree again, for the fever, without an instant's warning, can recur at any moment," (96). -> This is talking about how Baldwin finally sees the racism and discrimination against him and realizes why his father was so angry and bitter all the time. He has contracted the disease of seeing the unfair treatment and becoming intolerably angry about it and the situation.
      - "...the white world is too powerful, too complacent, too ready with gratuitous humiliation, and, above all, too ignorant and too innocent for that," (113).
