Twilight, Los Angeles 1992: After the beating of Rodney King, there were riots in 1992 that were in response to the verdict. Anna Deveare Smith created a one woman play where she expressed the perspectives of various people who were either in the riots, bystanders or perpetrators. Rather than only sharing one narrative of the story, she decided to bring light to the humanity of everyone who was affected by the riots, at the time. She pokes at the politics of representations as she mixes in the stories of politicians who were sharing their opinions and truths during the time, as well as those were who lower income and were facing direct consequences of the actions. What made this play beautiful, to me, was the fact that she took the time to tell the story of those who are often silenced through their perspective, without the conditioning of those who are in power.
