CASE STUDY #2:
Unfocused/Inattentive (Gr.2)
easily distracted
frequently looking out the window, around room, at objects, etc
often loose things necessary for tasks or assignments
unable to follow multi-step tasks
Tier 2
What was done?
Elaborate a Behavior Intervention Plan and RTI in collaboration with the school counselor
Tracking data
Each intervention implemented for 4 weeks
Collect specific data on strategies used and its outcomes, to be shared with parents and counselor
If there is no progress, move on to tier 3 and refer to psicological evaluation (possibility of ADHD)
Tier 3
What was done?
Create a Behavior Intervention Plan and work on it with counselor and parents as well
Use RTI strategies
Tracking data
If there is no progress, student must be referred for external evaluation and IEP
Tier 1
What was done?
Break down assignments
Give movement breaks in class
Move to a new location in the classroom (seat close to the board and the teacher)
Call on student frequently
Have students repeat directions back
Tracking data
Each intervention implemented for min. 4 weeks
Specific data of each intervention collected and tracked, with the outcome of each specific data on each intervention tried & its effect (use behavior tracker and look at it with student every day, give weekly report to parents)
Data shows no progress after 6 months, move to tier 2 interventions and consider referral for ADHD evaluation
CASE STUDY #1:
Tantrums/Out of Control (PreK)
lay on the floor and refuse to do what is asked
unable to deescalate after reasonable period of time
say very mean and vindictive phrases
be unreasonable
appear extremely upset
Tier 2
What was done?
Structured breaks
Teach coping skills (e.i. going to the safe place to deal with difficult emotions)
Teach relaxation techniques
Check in and check out
Tracking data
Each intervention implemented 4 weeks
Collect and track data of the outcomes of each intervention and progress made (use behavior tracker and look at it daily with student, give weekly report to parents)
If you do not see further progress, move on to tier 3 interventions
Tier 3
What was done?
Create a Behavior Intervention Plan and work on it with counselor and parents as well
Use RTI strategies
Tracking data
If there is no progress, student must be referred for external evaluation and IEP
Tier 1
What was done?
Avoid power struggles
Give choices
Teach deep breathing and othe coping strategies like balloon, star, drain
Clear, consistent, and predictable consequences
Use nonverbal cues
Maintain proximity to student
Tracking data
Each intervention implemented for min. 4 weeks
Specific data of each intervention collected and tracked, with the outcome of each specific data on each intervention tried & its effect (use behavior tracker and look at it with student every day, give weekly report to parents)
Data shows no progress after 6 months, move to tier 2 interventions
