Oral herpes
s/s: painful, itchy, creeping skin lesions on the lips, called fever blisters or cold sores, malaise, fever, and muscle pain, discomfort

Herpetic pharyngitis
young adults with sore throats resulting from viral infections and this causes pharynx to inflammation and infection
Herpes esophagitis
painful and difficult swallowing, fever, and sometimes chills

herpes virons cause infected cells to fuse w/ unifected neighboring cells to form a structure and will spread from cell to cell to avoid the immune system
Latent viruses could reactivate later in life when immune system is suppressed by stress, fever, trauma, sunlight, menstruation, or disease

Treat: with topical creams of penciclovir, acyclovir, or valacyclovir to limit duration of lesions and reduces viral shedding but not a cure

fomites can can spread disease too: razor blades, toothbrushes, and towels.

Viral Hepatitis

s/s: jaundice, abdominal pain, fatigue, vomit, weight loss, light clay colored stools, dark color urine
if untreated can cause slow response, slow acting, eventual coma
Type A
lives on counter tops, mattresses, cutting boards

Type B

in saliva, semen, razors, toothbrush, vaginal fluids, moms can pass on to baby

Type C
transmitted sexually and dirty, contaminated needles

Type D

results in acute, severe, liver damage

Type E
found on monkey's, apes, swine

Dx by observing the s/s, or blood tests, and a biopsy of the liver
Hepatitis B is diagnosed by identifying special proteins in the body fluids, called Dane particles
Treat: supportive care, lots of rest, reduce inflammation
Recommend the use of interferon, nucleotide anologs
prevent with good hygiene, protected sex, or abstinence
Viral Gastroenteritis
s/s: abdominal pain, cramping, maybe chills, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, clammy skin, lack appetite

cause can be: rodavirus, noravirus, astrovirus

Prevent with proper treatment of water and sewage, and good hand hygiene
