Unit 2 Metabolism and Survival
Metabolic pathways
ANABOLIC PATHWAYS
make or synthesise new molecules from basic building blocks but in doing is use energy in the form of andenosine triphospate
CATABOLIC PATHWAYS
break down larger molecules into smaller molecules during which there is a release of the energy adenosine triphospate
INTEGRATED PATHWAYS
this is when the two forms of pathways integrate and run along with each other such as the catabolic reaction of cell respiration and the anabolic reaction of protein synthesis
REVERSIBLE AND IRREVERSIBLE STEPS
each development of a pathway is controlled by an enzyme and some of these steps can be reversible and used in an alternative pathway. The cell has control over the pathway . An irreversible step could result in one metabolite being fully converted to another, with no alternative available .
Alternative routes
specific steps in a pathway can be bypassed using an alternative route or short cut so that instead of A-B-C it can do A-C
Enzyme control of metabolic pathways
Enzyme action
Enzyme inhibition
Cell respiration
Citric acid cycle and electron transport chain
