Without the proper mix of nutrients, young brains will not grow to their fullest potential, diminishing kids’ opportunities for the rest of their lives and perpetuating cycle of poverty.

A quarter of toddlers don’t receive enough iron, one in five children are obese, one in six households with children are food insecure, and more than half of infants participate in the federal Women, Infants, and Children program for supplemental nutrition

“Failure to provide key nutrients during this critical period of brain development may result in lifelong deficits in brain function despite subsequent nutrient repletion

over half of the nation’s infants are considered nutritionally at risk while being served by the WIC program

poverty and its attendant condition, malnutrition, weaken this foundation, leading to earlier mortality and significant morbidities such as poor health, and more insidiously, substantial loss of neurodevelopmental potential.

negative effects of "overnutrition" in the form of obesity and risky nutrition in the form of unbalanced diets or diets contaminated with potential toxins. Each of these conditions can be considered "malnutrition" in the true sense of the word’s roots (bad nutrition) and each has been shown to potentially reduce brain development.

Iron plays an important role.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world.

19 out of 21 studies reported impaired mental, motor, socio-emotional, or neurophysiologic functioning in infants with iron deficiency anemia compared to infants without iron deficiency anemia

plastic in its ability to recover from early insults and, hopefully, it is never too late to at least partially correct a deficit, the window of opportunity does narrow with advancing age
