(1) The teacher can identify signs of struggling student that have persisted over a long period of time
Difficulty following simple instructions
Incapable of meeting deadlines and completing tasks
Feelings of fear, stress, anger, and axiety when dealing with school and interpersonal issues
Problems with reading, writing, or math that don't match grade level
(2) Teacher sets a meeting with the parents to inform them about the problems observed (Meador, 2019)
Have they noticed any of these weaknesses at home
Has their child suffered from any of these struggles in previous classes
(2)Teacher intervenes and tries differentiated instructional strategies alligned with individual student needs
Model instructional practices and step- by-step rules to meet goals and expectations
Use assistive technology if it's available
Use visuals and graphic organizers to deliver material
Change written assessments to include oral presentations and give extra time for completion
Provide an alternate seating location if noise or distraction is an issue
Alternate between low-interest and high-interest tasks to keep students engaged and motivated
(3) After a specific time frame (around 2 months) did the student's performance get better? Is there any progress with respect to the struggles noted?
(4) Continue with the differentiated instructional strategies and keep parents updated with the progress
(4) Referral to Special Education Evaluation
(5) Parents or legal guardians should sign a consent form to allow for the evaluation process (Special Education: The Referral and Evaluation Process, n.d.)
