Human Nature
Marxism
Marx and Engels held that human nature had been disrupted by capitalism, which had installed a ‘false consciousness’ which encouraged material desire over natural cooperation.
Marx advocated class consciousness as a way of regenerating the lost human nature and recognise the exploitation wrought by capitalism.
Marxists reject the social democrat idea of regulated capitalism providing individual liberty and prosperity without exploitation, as capitalist inherently alienates the individual from others, with labour reduced to a commodity rather than a creative or productive endeavour.

All socialists believe that human nature is positive and 'plastic': shaped by society and material conditions. They believe that this makes humans cooperative and altruistic, and have the potential to work together for common goals.
