Tier 1
Tier 1 interventions are general and the least restrictive. I wanted to pick behavior strategies that all students can have access to. For unfocused/inattentive behavior, I chose non-verbal cues as a way of communication with students without calling negative attention. It can be a great way to redirect the whole class. For disruptive behavior, allowing breaks can help student to cool down and be away from the stressful situation. This strategy can be applied not only for the disruptive students but for all the student that may need some time to themselves. I plan to create classroom procedures and norms so that taking a break does not mean "time out" but a positive time for students to be away for self reflection. For both strategies I wanted to apply positive ways to redirect students in class.
Tier 2
Tier 2 interventions are more specific behavior supports. I chose interventions that can be applied to small group of students. I think check in/check out system is a great way to help disruptive students who are struggling to meet behavior expectations on daily basis. When student get a daily feedback, that can help them adjust their behavior and it can help with accountability. For unfocused/inattentive students, forming an agreement with a behavior contract can be a positive reinforcement to keep student accountable. For both types of behaviors, I applied strategies that reinforce accountability to students.
Tier 3
For Tier 3, I chose strategies that are more specifically designed for individual students for both inattentive/unfocused students and disruptive students. For inattentive/unfocused students I thought Response to Intervention (RTI) plan can help reduce behavior problems that leads to falling behind academically. For disruptive students, Behavior Intervention Plan can provide support to monitor the student with the help of qualified staff members that can carefully assess what triggers the negative behavior. For both of the strategies, it is important to hold meetings with all parties involved, including the parent, teachers and staff.
I created a flowchart for the unfocused/inattentive behavior and for the disruptive behavior for primary students. I believe interventions should be temporary systems to help students begin to self-regulate. Some students may need new interventions after they meet their prior goals. The important thing to remember is that every student is different when creating a behavior interventions.
