~Ancient Vikings~
Religions and beliefs
In the Vikings’ religion, the gods were warriors too. Thor, the god of thunder, made constant war against the ice and snow giants of the North.
The king of Asgard, Odin, rules over all the gods
-
Vikings believed that death on a battle is the most honourable way to die and it would allow them to live in Asgard (similar to heaven) in their afterlife
Military and power
Vikings were trained at a young age to be strong and self-reliant, and to be tough
As soon as a boy could carry a weapon, he was taught to thrust a sword, to swing a battle-ax, and to throw a spear.
This made vikings extremely skilful in terms of fighting and. made them very strong opponents to come across
The vikings were extremely skilled sailors and seamen at the time
Quick wit, bravery and action were among the key attributes for a Viking warrior
Raids and expansion
The Vikings would board their long ships and head across the waters to raid villages on the northern coast of Europe, including islands such as Great Britain.
-
In the western seas, Scandinavian expansion was everywhere.
Settlers poured into Iceland from at least about 900AD, and, from Iceland, colonies were founded in Greenland and attempted in North America. The same period saw settlements arise in the Orkney, Faroe, and Shetland islands, the Hebrides, and the Isle of Man.
