Christmas
Jesus wasn't actually born on the 25th of December, it was a roman festival date that was commandeered by the church
Advent Prep - this begins 4 Sundays before Christmas, candles are lit - Jesus is known as the light of the world. It used to be a time of fasting and penitence but this was abolished
Christingle Service - an orange (the world) wrapped with a red ribbon (Jesus' blood), dried fruits and sweets (the fruits of the earth) and the candle put in the middle of the orange (the light of christ)
Easter
Easter is the main Christian festival, this is reflected in the longer festivities and celebrations in Church, Easter Sunday and the celebration of the resurrection is the basis of faith upon which Christianity is founded
Holy week is immediately before easter sunday, it is the last week of jesus' life and the last week of lent
important days in this week are: palm sunday, maundy thursday and good friday
palm sunday: it celebrates the arrival of jesus in Jerusalem, people threw palm leaves and coats in the way of the donkey a small cross made form palm leaves
Monday to Wednesday:
Monday: Jesus cleansed the temple, flips tables
Tuesday: he teaches in the temple and is asked questions by the pharisees, the Sadducee's and followers of the king, all designed to catch him out
Wednesday: Judas starts planning his betrayal and he is paused 30 silvers (a lot)
Maundy Thusday: the last supper and the betrayal of jesus, he washes all of the disciples feet to show humililty
Good Friday: Jesus is sent to Pontius Pilate who doesn't find him guilty, then he's sent to King Herod and then back to Pilate
Pilgrimage
A pilgrimage is a sacred journey in which god is encountered through places people and situations a pilgrim meets
The physical journey coincides with an inner spiritual journey that reflects the concept of life itself a pilgrimage towards heaven
