- - - - "You betrayed us, this is betrayal. betray betray betray betray betray betray...I knew exactly how much hurt could fit into a word" (Crucet 47).
        
        This image and quote form the way abandonment and betrayal are linked to Lizet's family and academic life. She wants to grow as a person and succeed not only for her but for her family as well. However, her family sees this new phase as Lizet abandoning them and betraying their family in Miami.
        
        While Lizet is struggling with this theme of abandonment and betrayal, Ariel Hernandez also has to deal with it as a young boy who immigrated from Cuba. "Abandoned" by his mother who died to get him in the U.S. and betrayed by the U.S. by bringing him back to Cuba.
- - - - "She had caught a serious case of the hips-ass-chest, a condition which during the midforties spelled trouble with a capital T to the R to the U to the J to the illo" (Díaz 216).
        
        Being a beautiful Dominican woman during the time of Trujillo's dictatorship meant a high possibility of being raped by him. This "fukú" for Dominican women made them victims to sexual harassment and abuse no matter how old they were.
        
        I chose this image to represent a woman's body just how Díaz describes it in the novel. "The sexy isthmus of her waist alone could have launched a thousand yolas" (132).
        
        Also pointing out that this was not just Trujillo who was very in touch with his masculinity. Most Dominican men in this novel, including the narrator Yunior, are machismos, too.
- - - - "Colonized, and hypnotized, be something. Sterilized, dehumanized, be something. Well, take your pay and stay out the way, be something. Ah, do your best but fuck the rest, be something" (Hurray for the Riff Raff).
        
        This song sends a strong message of pridefulness and to keep going even if one is struggling as a Puerto Rican or any kind of minority.
        
        The video showed this scene of a mother and her daughter living in Puerto Rico. The mother struggles to make ends meet yet she keeps going and does what she has to do to care for her daughter. This is what the song discusses. To be something is to be able to know who one is and take pride that one day it will all work out.
- - - - Drugs in the 1980s became an epidemic through the entire country. Crack and heroin impacted the poor neighborhoods the most. Thomas himself, like a lot of people in Harlem, became addicted and thought this was a feeling of belonging. The numb feeling made them forget their troubles and struggles.
- - - - Haitians in the DR would get treated horribly because of the color of their skin. In the story, the disease that is hitting people of color is called La Negrura. In translation it is "The Blackening". It only targeted black people. This racism is still present until this day. Dominicans still will deny their African roots.
- - - - The poem shows how in 2016 to present day, the social construct of racism has not and will not go away. Latinx people want to help this issue by speaking out, however, because some Latinx people are white passing they can be the ones who also stay quiet. This does not help our country develop in a progressive way, it only lets the people in power get away with killing innocent people of color.
        
        Unfortunately, the country (Electoral College) elected Trump as president. Since his presidency there have been a lot of violent acts against people of color. He has been overtly racist himself and has supported white supremacy earlier in his campaign. This monster of a president has quite literally made our country NOT great but because of his nonsense, many people have advocated against him and our country has been united more than ever to get him out of office.
- - - - The picture is a mural of the indigenous people that fought for their land. This represents the Chicanos that used persuasive rhetoric to get their people to mobilize and unite.
