Structure of DNA

Chargaffs rules: 1.DNA base composition varies between species.
2.for each species, the percentages of A and T bases are roughly equal same with G and C bases.
although the basis of these rules remained unexplained until the discovery of the double helix, Chargaffs rules could be used to predict percentages of nucleotide bases.
Difference between DNA, chromatin and chromosomes.
Chromatin- Making up a eukaryotic chromosome and is composed of DNA, Histones and other proteins. A complex of DNA and protein,
-
DNA- is genetic material, information in the form of genes.
-
DNA replication models
Semi conservative model- The two strands of the parental molecule separate and each functions as a template for synthesis of a new complementary strand.
Dispersive model- Each strand of both daughter molecules contains a mixture of old and newly synthesized DNA.
Conservative model- The two parental strands re-associate after acting as templates for new strands, restoring the parental double helix.
RNA processing
during RNA processing the introns are cute out and the exons spliced together. in many genes the introns are much longer than the exons.
INTRONS- the non coding segments of nucleic acid that lie between coding regions are also called intervening sequences.
EXONS- other segments that will be eventually expressed, usually by being translated into amino acid sequences.
enzymes modify the two ends of a eukaryotic pre mRNA molecule, the modified ends may promote the export of mRNA from nucleus and they help protect the mRNA from degredation
when mRNA reaches the cytoplasm, the modified ends in conjunction with certain cytoplasmic ptoteins facilitate ribosome attachment.
