Civics and Citizenship Term 4
WEEK 1
Government is a group of people that lead a state or country.
Civics is the study of the rights and duties of citizenship.
Citizenship is being a citizen of a particular place or group.
Multiculturalism is being accepted by people for your culture of choice.
Parliament is a large group of people ranked in order of importance that govern us and pass our laws.
Parliament democracy is a parliament that lets the citizens have a say in who they are governed by.
Democracy is a form of government that lets the people vote on who governs them. Australia is an example because when we are 18 we are eligible to vote
The democratic value are: Liberty, Equality, Justice and they are there to make sure our freedom is assured
The Westminster system is a form of government that was developed in the United Kingdom
Justice is a judge or magistrate, in particular a judge of the Supreme Court of a country or state.
Participation is taking part in something. e.g voting
Rights and responsibilities are laws that help make our communities better
WEEK 2
We need laws to keep everybody safe, they are in place to keep the peace and ensure everyone is happy.
Legal laws are laws that have been passed by the Governor general and are written down. Non-Legal laws are laws that aren't written down but people know to follow them. e.g getting to school on time.
Statutory law is a law that is written and passed by a body of legislature
To make a law in parliament the House of representatives must have 3 readings then pass it to the Senate who will have another 3 readings then they pass it to the Governor General who will accept or decline the law.
Common law is a law that a judge has made that then has to be followed in court.
There is high court, Federal court, Local court, Family court etc.
WEEK 3
Criminal law is a law that deals with criminal offenders
Criminal offenders are punished with fines, jail time, community service and in some places, death.
Civil law is a law that deals with private problems between members of a community.
Civil law is punished by paying compensation to the opposition.
Customary laws are laws that aren't passed by the governor general and are spread by word.
Indigenous Australians want to keep their laws because its a part of their culture.
People are disrespecting Indigenous Australians Customary laws by trespassing on scared land
WEEK 4
We did test revision and did our test
Freedom of speech is being able to say whatever you want and express yourself freely. e.g protesting governent.
Freedom of association is being able to freely join or leave any group of your choice. e.g joining a lego club.
Freedom of assembly is being able to peacefully join to promote or protest. e.g protesting climate change
Freedom of religion is being able to practise any religion of your choice. e.g being Muslim
Freedom of movement is being able to move freely between states, regions and countries. e.g going to Bali for a holiday
Bound by law means it is protected by the law. e.g you can peacefully protest but if it turns violent it is no longer protected by law.
WEEK 5
Freedom of speech is bound by law because you can say whatever you like but if you say something that offends someone else it is no longer bound by law. e.g if you swear at someone.
Freedom of association is bound by law because you can freely join any group but if you join an illegal group it is no longer bound by law. e.g you join isis
Freedom of assembly is bound by law because you are able to peacefully join and protest but if the protest turns violent it is no longer bound by law. e.g a riot.
Freedom of religion is bound by law because you're able to practise any religion but if you promote extreme actions it is no longer bound by law. e.g making living sacrifices.
Freedom of movement is bound by law because you can move freely between places but if you do things like drug trafficking or bringing in weapons it is no longer bound by law.
