- - - - I am Joaquin shows the true support of embracing who you are as a person. No matter what a person may classify as, they have their nationality and heritage to support them and back them up. No matter how they are treated, their nationality will never abandon them. I am Joaquin shows conforming is not how battles are won. The poem was written by Rodolfo Gonzales, an important figure that represented the Chicano Civil Rights Movement and spoke of the struggles many people with his nationality face. He wants his people to represent their culture and not allow others to stop them.
  - - - Elian Gonzalez was seen as an essential part of the Cuban Revolution. When he was 5 years old, he was found off the coast of Florida, coming from Cuba. The United States and Cuba entered a legal battle to determine if Elian was allowed to stay in the United States. He was eventually sent back and reunited with his father in Cuba, but remains a significant figure in the Cuban Revolution. Elian embraced his nationality and wanted to make his presence and opinion known throughout Cuba. His story is seen as a warning against the government and a reason to understand what it means to embrace your nationality no matter what country or situation you are in.
  - - - This line is important to the way nationality and heritage play a part in every person's life. Latin literature is about embraces your heritage and nationality and the wording being used in this quote shines a light on how people perceived other nationalities. Although Haitians are part of the Latinx community, there seems to be tension between Haitians and the Dominican Republic. Latinx Literature is about exposing the true feelings and situations that were happening in the past. Although Monsto was fiction, it was based on a scenario that happened in real life. Quarantining and separating people that seem different is something that is still happening to this day.
- - - - Piri is not always sure of who he really is. He struggles to figure out what nationality he is and how he should be acting. He faces an inner turmoil of what he is, but is able to figure out what he is not. He is told time and time again what he can not do and be according to other people and is also told how different he is from the rest of his family and friends. He changes his wording between both Spanish and English while talking showing in full force the problems he faces with his self. Finding his identity means a lot to him, but his emotions get in the way of finding out what works best for him. Many people within his Puerto Rican culture face similar problems when trying to find themselves. Assimilating to the culture you are surrounded by can cause inner problems because people are not able to be who they truly want to be.
  - - - Esperanza is the clear example of discovering and understanding the past. A big part of Latinx literature involves understanding your heritage and where you came from. Esperanza gave us a perspective as a child of how she understood the world. She knew she was different from the people around her, but did not quite understand how that all fit in. She wants to change things about herself such as her name, but once she's grown she embraces these qualities and has a sense of what her heritage actually means to her.
- - - - Lizet experiences a common problem that many people face. She wants to belong, but other people shoot down her opinions and her actions. The people who she is surrounded by, make her question her heritage, personality, family, and herself. She changes herself to fit who she is around and in turn tries to find a place she belongs too. Many people face similar dilemmas. In Lizet’s culture, there is a certain path people are supposed to follow. She went against the grain in her personal life at home and with her life at college. She does not truly belong to either place, which goes hand in hand with the feeling of being lost between two cultures. Two cultures that mean just as much as each other.
  - - - One thing that is important to note in this text is the language of how Yunior talks about Oscar. In the Dominican Republic, stereotypes play a large role in how people look at you and how they treat you. Latinx literature does a great service to showing how people are treated according to these stereotypes. Oscar, not following any of the traditional Dominican stereotypes, still lived his life in a way that made him happy. Yunior on the other hand seemed to not embrace his inner "nerd" and only want to be apart of what made him fit his role. He wanted to belong and could not understand why Oscar did not want the same .
- - - - "Juan, Miguel, Olga, Manuel will right now be doing their own thing where beautiful people sing and dance and work together. Where the wind is a stranger to miserable weather conditions. Where you do not need a dictionary to communicate with your people."
      - Latinx Literature has a sense of community. People of this nationality embrace their culture and stick together. They look out for for another. In this poem written by Pedro Pietri, it is important to look at how he talks about each person. Noticing that although they do live different lives, they are all still together and can communicate with one another no matter the situation. Even when other people try to bring down their spirit, they have a sense of community behind them.
