Upstream causes
Direct:Pool sticks are too heavy, legs get tired too quickly, tripped outside her house, her muscles are now weak.Skeletal muscle cells are affected.
Indirect: Some risk factors are heredity, genetics, age, sex. Our patient had ASL in her family history. Her age also can be a reason why she's experiencing muscle weakness.
physiology
Organ system
Nervous system: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects the brain and the spinal cord.
Respiratory system: Amyotrophic later sclerosis affects the lungs, and makes it hard to breathe
Organ
cerebrum: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects the the upper motor neuron which are in the brain
Spinal cord: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis affects the the lower motor neurons in the spinal cord
Neurons
motor neurons: Upper and lower motor neurons die out, meaning they stop sending out messages
process of movement
precentral gyrus: controls the voluntary and skeletal movements
cerebellum: Controls your balance, coordination, and posture
Basal nuclei: or the Basal ganglia is responsible for body movements and coordination
Descending spinal cord: Carry motor fibres to the spinal cord and brainstem
Ascending Tract: (Afferent)Sensory Neurons, sending messages to the brain
Descending Tract: (Efferent)Motor neuros, sends messages to spinal cord.
Down stream effects
Medications
Rilzloue: helps reduce damaged motor neurons
Edaravone: slow the decline in clinical assessment of daily functioning
Treatments
Physical therapy: can enhance a persons independence and safety throughout the course of ASL
Speech therapy: People with ASL have difficulty speaking, speech therapist help maintain the ability to communicate
Nutritional support: Will teach individuals how to plan and prepare meals to get enough calories in. Also how to avoid foods that are hard to swallow
Breathing support: Breathing will start to weaken, Noninvasive ventilation is a mask over nose/ mouth to help breathe.
There is no cure for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
