52 year old vet showing symptoms of ALS
ALS affects the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movements such as walking/talking
ALS causes motor nuerons to gradually deteriorate and die
(indirect) ALS is inherited by age, smoking, enviremnental toxin exposure, and MILITARY SERVICE linked bc exposure to metals/chemicals , injuries, infections
be responsible bc living with ALS is a lot of work
keep track of doctor appointments
look into research go clinical trials bc modern medicine is improving everyday
will need to take a lot of medication- riluzole reduces damage to motor neurons by decreasing levels of glutamate
complications
muscle weakness/cramps-physical therapy to rebuild strength
slurred/nasal speech- speech therapy to relearn speccing ability
cerebrum-large part of the brian containing the cerebral cortex
spinal cord- long, thin tubular structure made up of nervous tissue , extends from the medulla oblongata in brainstem to lumbar region of the vertebral column
sensory neurons -located in dorsal ganglia
motor nuerons-ventral horn
interneurons-located in grey column
cerebrum-directs the conscious/motor functions of the body
descending tracts- pathways by which signals are sent from the brain and are located in lateral/interior columns
pre central gyrus- the anatomical location of the motor cortex responsible for control voluntary motor nerve movement on body contralateral side
ascending tracts transmit soma sensory information and are located in all columns
basal nuclei helps start, stop, and control desired body movements
cerebellum receive information from sensory systems, spinal cord, and other parts of the brain that regulate motor movements
