Nias, an Indonesian Island, is the birthplace of the legend that the Earth is held up by the demon Ba Ouvondo, and they believed that if they didn't make the correct sacrifices he would cause earthquakes as punishment. (8) While he is described as a demon, the nature of this description implies the Demon is also characterized by it's size, causing large scale natural repurcussuions to the people's potential disrespect. A similar story comes out of Japan, instead with a giant catfish catfish called Namazu holding the earth on it's head.
