- - - - Sugar act 1764 - Taxed sugar imports from any other country than the mother country. This was in order to repay debt from the F&I war, as well as reduce smuggling, and to make tax collector more honest, finally there were harsher punishments for corruption.
      - Stamp Act 1765 - Put a tax on any printed paper. ex.) Playing cards, books, newspaper, etc.
        Colonists saw the stamp act as a threat to their rights, "Taxation without representation" This act sparked the sons of liberty, the act was repealed in 1766
      - Townshend Acts 1767 - This suspended the New York assembly, taxed paint, lead, glass, and tea. this was meant to bay the salaries of the British officers, and was a response to the failure of the stamp act of 1765. Colonists started to boycott British goods
      - Quartering Acts - 1765 - Colonists must pay for British soldiers food and housing, soldiers were put in empty spaces available, act was to be revised every 2 years. - 1774 - Soldiers were put into personal homes, colonists who were more outspoken about being against Britain generally had a soldier in their home
      - Tea Act 1773 - Get rid of Excess tea from the British East India Company. The colonists saw this as a corrupt move on Britain's party and started to boycott British tea, this lead to the Boston Tea Party later on.
      - Intolerable/Coercive Acts - Closed Boston harbor until debt from the Boston Tea Party was paid (almost $1 million in damages). Town meetings were banned in the Massachusetts colony (the sons of liberty could still meet because they met in pubs and taverns.) Colonists could not elect officials, nor could they try British officers in a court of law.

        Sons/Daughters of Liberty - The sons of liberty were a political, underground organization on round men ex.) S. Adams, J. Hancock, P. Revere, etc. Formed to resist the stamp act, this group helped move the colonists towards Independence instead of just promoting change. - Daughters of Liberty - A public force of patriot women who took part in boycotts by finding and making alternatives to British Products, this was the only socially acceptable way for women to protest at the time.
        
        Committee of Correspondence 1764 - Formed to encourage unity and communication between the colonies. The committees wanted to express dissatisfaction through the colonies as well, the worsening situation with the British encouraged unity. in the end the First continental congress emerged from the committees of correspondence.

        Natural rights - The rights that an individual is born with ("life, liberty, and property" - John Locke) but was later changed in the Declaration of Independence by Jefferson to "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
        
        Social contract (consent of the governed) - The idea that Citizens of a country must give up some of their rights for protection from the government. While the ruler gets their power from the people, the people, in turn, have the right to remove the ruler from power if he/she becomes corrupt.

        Geographic knowledge of land - The continental army was familiar with the land as they had lived there for many years, the British however were unfamiliar with the land and its hiding spots, as they were a long distance away from Britain
        
        Battles
        
        Saratoga - The British took ft. Ticonderoga very easily however they then attempt to take ft. Saratoga (September battle) the American victory of this battle convinced France to join the American cause by aiding in supplies and troops. Benedict ends up telling British that he'll give them west point (academy/important)
        
        Lexington/concord - Thomas Gage led redcoats to Concord to destroy a colonial weapons store house, they were however met by minutemen in Lexington. Minutemen tried to stop the British soldiers however 8 men were killed, no one is sure who fired the first shots but that was the first violence of the war, "Shot heard around the world". - Concord - After the battle at Lexington, the British troops made their way to Concord only to find that the colonists, weapons, and the gunpowder were gone. Local minutemen met the British and engaged in a battle, the British were forced to retreat. On the way to return, the colonists attacked the British using guerrilla tactics, over all 73 British soldiers died. These two battles started the revolution
        
        Long island - British soldiers and the confederate army (led by general George Washington) Fought for control over New York. In the end the British lost and Washington gained control of New York. The British had originally tried to control the revolution by isolating it in the New England colonies. Washington troops were trapped and made a quick escape by crossing the east river at night. If Washington had died then the War would have been lost or if Washington had been captured.
        
        Valley forge - George Washington's troop's made camp for winter in Valley Forge PA the worsening conditions led to frost bite low morale and desertion. Von Steuben pretended to be a German noble and give the soldiers something to do each day, by the end of the winter the soldiers emerged as a unified force, and with more practiced fighting tactics
        
        Yorktown - Washington gets word that a large British army is headed to Yorktown to retrieve supplies. Washington and Rochambeau trick the smaller portion in the north by building forts, and then heading south to surround the cornwalls. the french block the British from the water with their navy, Washington blocks on land. this was the final revolutionary war battle.
        
        Loyalist/Tories - someone who supports Britain and believes that the colonies are being unjust and unruly
        
        Patriots - someone who supports the colonists side of the war or opposition

        Treaty of Paris 1783- uS became an independent country. The uS could fish off of the Atlantic coast of Canada,Britain had to repay debts from the war, and had to return any captured slaves. the uS had to return seized loyalist belongings, (was not enforced) most loyalists ended up leaving the uS and going back to Britain or Canada
        
        Homespun movement - the boycott of British goods, this began in 1764 and in 1769 city and state legislators began to formally boycotts British products and goods, women played a significant role in the Homespun Movement. Patriot women would host parties to create and find alternatives to British products as women were the primary buyers of household goods. this was the only socially acceptable way for women to protest at the time
        
        Boston Massacre - was a battle/fight that occurred in response or reaction to a disagreement between a wig maker and a British soldier over payment for a wig. once a crowd started to form around the argument the colonists started throwing rocks,and snowballs filled with ice at the soldiers present, the British soldiers were overwhelmed, and outnumbered so they freaked out and started shooting, thus resulting in the deaths of 5 colonists
        
        Boston Tea Party - on December 16, 60 Colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded a British tea ship and dumped all the tea crates on board into the Boston harbor. This resulted in the passing of the intolerable acts and a debt of almost $1 million in damages for the colonists. With this act against the British crown, tensions increased between the colonies and the crown
