In general corrosion, the anodic site corrodes, but then develops a protective film that essentially protects the site from further corrosion. In effect, this causes the site to reverse polarity, or become more electrochemically noble than the surrounding sites. In turn, those sites corrode, but immediately develop a protective film. This continuous polarity reversal results in uniform deterioration of the entire exposed surface.
