*Roman Empire *
started in the late first century B.C
roman empire encompassed territories that were completely different from each other(Mediterranean area, north africa , middle east , western-central europe
the empire is divided into provinces , in rome they
used to consume were produced in other provinces so
1) when expansion stopped the economy begin to drop also the empire had become too vast the 2)extension of all provinces was so huge that were really costly to maintain
3)public officer were likely to be corrupted because that time keeping central power was really difficult
4)invasions by barbarians(group of Germanic populations) therefore protecting the borders takes lots of expneses
When the wars of expansion ended, an economic crisis began. Trade decreased, there was inflartion
crises
cultural crisis
1) Roman were polytheists(worship many gods) . Romans had no problem in introducing many goods . the christian religious refused to do it because they worship only one god
2) christian religion caused changes in all levels as
a. (every one is equal in front of god , jesus pays attention to poor people but roman society was strictly hierarchic and based on inequality
b. christians preached universal brotherhood ( you have to love your enemies
c.christians were freed from the burden of life , they hope in an afterlife this contrasted with roman culture because it was practical and it had material ( the reward of the romans was in the present life but for the christians was after life
the number of Christians increased and Latin helps to spread the Christianity(because it was a sort of universal language used almost everywhere . they created institutional organizations inspired by the province system . each zone was in charge of bishop ( the chief)
for all these reasons christian started to be persecuted by the romans specially under Diocletain's reign
