        Scientists strive to predict tsunamis so that endangered coastal areas can be evacuated. One method uses devices called seismographs to measure seismic waves (waves of vibration generated by earthquakes). By analyzing seismic waves, scientists can determine when and where an undersea earthquake has occurred and calculate its strength. As a result, they can then estimate the size of a possible tsunami and the time its waves will reach land. Seismic waves travel through the ground much faster than tsunami waves travel through the water. For this reason, scientists can sometimes warn people several hours before tsunami waves strike.

The Japanese call the mountain Fuji-san or Fuji-yama. Fuji has long, symmetrical slopes. Its top often is hidden by clouds. Its crown of snow melts in summer.

        volcano that has long been dormant. It is the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere and the highest peak outside of Asia. Aconcagua is part of the Andes mountain range in South America.
        
        Aconcagua stands 22,841 feet (6,962 meters) high in western Argentina, near the border of Chile. Long ago, it was probably more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) taller than it is today. However, the upper portion of the volcano has crumbled away and few traces of its crater remain.

Once you're safe, cover your neck and head to protect them from falling debris. If you're outside, move to an open space, away from anything that can fall, like a tree.
