Alice’s grandmother is a paradoxical character:
She instructs Alice to love sensibly, but her personal love life was passionate.
Kien’s experience of isolation and unacceptance in the family is anomalous as it challenges our understanding on family relationships
Human qualities and emotions arising from experiences
Kien undergoes depression since Huyen controls the finances and letter sent to Cambodia, she can't really tell her family how bad Huyen treats her and what's really going on in Australia.
Human emotions are greatly affected by their past experiences

Alice's hardship in the family when her mother and grandmoher both want to control her.
Kien becomes prone to suicidal thoughts as she feels that Huyen tells Alice bad things about Kien and how bad she is as a mother
Alice's parents blame her for not taking care of her sibling properly i.e. Alina's head accident. She becomes as her father doesn't understand that Kien left them, without supervision for hours therefore it wasn't Alice's fault
Inviting the responder to see the world differently, to challenge assumptions, ignite new ideas or reflect personally
An example of the mind state that comes from the Asian community would be, when the mother says that she doesn't want Alice to date or marry a white boy.
