Metaphor
Example: He is a walking encyclopedia!
He isn’t an actual walking encyclopedia, he is being compared to an encyclopedia.

Alliteration

Example: The big black bull rushed towards the red cloth.
Big, Black and bull all start with the letter ‘B’.
However, Elizabeth eats eight buns isn’t an alliteration because eight makes a sound just like the vowel “A”.

Example: The trees were dancing in the wind.
The trees weren’t actual dancers, it is just a way of describing how a tree sways.

Onomatopoeia

Example: “POP!”, went the balloon.
The word Pop describes the sound made by the balloon.

Hyperbole
A word, sentence or claim exaggerating something that isn’t meant to be taken literally.
Example: I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!
The person doesn’t actually want to eat a horse, it is just a way of exaggerating that the person is hungry.

The boy was being compared to a cheetah for his ability to be fast.

This meant that it was very easy hanging the picture.

The person isn’t actually Hitler. It is just a reference to WW2.
