Natural Disasters
Tsunamis
Earthquakes
Volcanoes
Infectious Diseases/Epidemics
Landslides
Dust/Wind/Ice Storms
Three types of volcanoes:
Shield cone volcano
Stratovolcano
Cinder cone volcano
Caused when the tectonic plates of the Earth shift
Tsunamis often come soon after earthquakes
An epidemic is when a deadly disease travels to many people very quickly
There are four types of landslides:
Convergent plates
Transform plates
Divergent Plates
Measured on a scientific tool called a siesmograph
when an earthquake hits a place, people can be buried in fallen rubble, or they may die, trapped underneath the remains of fallen buildings
A sudden swell in the ocean is a sign that a tsunami is coming soon, and that you should get very far away from the sea and head inland
Tsunamis can grow up to about 100 feet, which is about 30 meters
Tsunamis can travel at a speed of up to 600 mph (900 kph)
Are the cause of some other natural disasters as well, such as tsunamis or landslides
The shape of the coastline that the tsunami hits may also affect the impact of the tsunami
Diseases are basically just sicknesses that can be either very deadly, or not so much, and sometimes they may even kill thousands or millions
Tsunamis can tear through cities and towns, causing a large amount of destruction
Satellites can record tsunamis as well, gathering information so that we can build up our defenses to help lessen the effects of a tsunami
After eruptions, volcanologists collect fresh lava samples, for example, different gas mixtures may make it more explosive
Good hygiene is one of the most important factors to help prevent diseases
Usually have one vent that erupts ash and rocks that fall in a ring
Runny lava erupts from the vent in a gushing river or fountain
Thick, sticky lava cools and hardens quickly to produce steep mountain. Rocky, ashy eruptions alternate with lava, which creates layers in the mountain/volcano.
The ash from a volcano can be deadly if breathed into your lungs
Slumping
Soil Creep
Debris Flow
Rockfall
Slow, tiny shifts in the soil
A faster slide, when slabs of land slip down a slope
When a slope becomes saturated with water
Sudden slides caused by heavy rain or frost
Landslides can cover people, which may suffocate or bury them alive
Some diseases cannot be prevented or treated as of our current technology
When warm air rises and cold air takes it's place, wind is formed
Tsunamis affect us by tearing down buildings and drowning thousands or even millions of people-Tsunamis cause a lot of destruction throughout the world
Many diseases are spread by cuts, food and drink, insect bites, and the air that you breathe.
Some deadly blood diseases are transferred by needles that have been used more than once, or by other medical supplies that are being reused, which are not supposed to be reused
Can include many different types of precipitation
Droughts
People must store enough water to survive
Many places can end up being very dry and the inhabitants may end up dying of dehydration
A drought is when most or all of the bodies of water in a location dry up, and the people who live in these places are forced to find some of source of water, or except the fate that they will die
