Open Source Software
Available to anyone who wishes to debug,modify,improve or modify its source code
Closed Source Software
Protected by intellectual property rights and copyright, with the full force of the law being brought down upon those who flout the restrictions
Off the shelf Software
Pre - designed software ready for use once downloaded. Fit for the system that downloads it
Bespoke Software
It is made to your exact measurement, it is expensive and takes time for the designer to identify your needs and convert them into a specification to turn into the program
Shareware
Free for use until 30 - 60 days before you have to purchase the product
Freeware
Distributed free of charge. although there may be restrictions on upgrades or no warranty
Embedded Software
Embedded in a traditional PC or devices we do not consider to be computers

Productivity Software
Designed to enable you to carry out your task or role accurately, effectively and efficiently. It produces the correct outcome, in line with your instructions and you do not waste your time or resources

Help those who are creating new software for other purposes. This software could be a programming tool used to create debug, enhance and maintain programs during their life cycles
Business Software
Supports one or more business activities. It includes not only project management tools, CAD/CAM design packages and management information systems (MIS) but also specialist software
2.3 : Utility Software
Backup Facilities
Which remind you to back up your data in case if hardware failure, loss or theft of the computer.
Antivirus Utility
Regularly scans the computer for evidence of malware activity or presence; it also checks for new threats and removes them to a 'quarantine location' where they are held for the user to confirm that they are to be deleted
2.4 : Operating System
Group of systems software which manages the resources of the computer by:
Controlling the time each task is allowed in the processor
Interrupting when a more urgent task takes priority
Ensuring data is stored properly and the location recorded
Retrieving data from storage
Monitoring input and output
Normally Supplied with the computer and may only run on that hardware, However:
Other operating systems such as Windows can be installed on a range of devices
Operating systems differ with the role expected of them
Single user operating system is found on PCs and tablets, where only one user can operate the device at a time
Multi user operating system has facilities which enable two or more users to have access at the same time
