THE HANDMAIDS TALE

TOXIC MASCULINITY
Unchanging, universal and monolithically imposed

-
INTRO SENTENCE
Further regarding the attitudes upheld by society surrounding the oppression of women, Atwood explores how men have a naturally inbuilt instinction to suppress and control women.

Luke comforts her by saying its only a job, measures are only temporary, stands dominant, reassuring her he will be able to provide income for the family

Men are solely driven by the power to oppress women, and points out that that universal 'natural course of life' always return to males dominating females
Primarily a result of social conditioning from many generations- and is a direct product of toxic masculinity
Concept refers to the internalised ideas of masculinity by men that leave them to conform to certain norms of masculine behaviour that are associated with harm to society and to men themselves.
Toxic masculinity is often a poor justification of why young men subscribe to traditional ideas of 'manhood' and are more likely to harrass women and treat them as the inferior gender----what shaped Gilead---could allow a totalitarian take over in our own society
DISUNITY OF WOMEN
Men are sex machines...and nothing more...you must learn to manipulate them, for your own good. It's natures way. Its Gods device. It's the way things are.
Whose fault was it?......"Her fault, her fault, her fault"

INTRO SENTENCE
Placing the novel in the context of a feminist perspective, provides a deeper understanding of how the novel functions as an expression of the disunity of women.
This underlying theme of the novel explores patriarchal control and 'traditional' misogyny to women, and in turn how it has formed a new misogyny; womens hatred of women.
This gives us insight into the fundamentals of society and how disturbingly similar it is that women are looked at as the inferior gender, even by women in higher hierarchal positions.
In the culture of victim blaming, the tendency is to blame the victim of the crime, rather than the perpetrator.
When the realty is the rapist is 100% responsible for rape, and the victim has not affiliation regarding their clothing or behaviour which condems someone the right to rape them.
