Pathophysiology of Elimination
Alteration in Urine Elimination
Alteration in Neuromuscular Function
Disease: Cystitis causes overactivity of the bladder, leading to altered function of sensory neurons.
Lack of communication or effectiveness of neuronal control or muscular responsiveness resulting in urinary retention or incontinence.
Caused by: failure of neurons in PNS or CNS, altered neurotransmitter production/availability, etc.
Treatment: antibiotics, surgery, etc.
Alteration in Motility
Disease: Glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomeruli)
Promote stasis of filtrate in renal tubules and stasis of urine in bladder.
Caused by: urinary incontinence, etc.
Treatment: dialysis, kidney transplant (if severe), etc.
Alteration in Patency
Disease: Urolithiasis (aka: Kidney Stones)
Blockage of structures involved in urinary pathway leading to obstruction.
Caused by: tumors, urine precipitation, etc.
Treatment: surgical removal of kidney stones, etc.
Alteration in Perfusion
Treatment: Anticoagulant medication, etc.
Disease: Renal Infarction
Inadequate arterial blood supply results in ischemia and infarction
Caused by: blood clots, low blood volume, etc.
Alteration in Stool Elimination
Alteration in Motility
Alteration in the motility of the fecal matter through the large intestine will alter the amount of nutrient and water reabsorption into the body.
Caused by: irritating foods, narcotic analgesics, etc.
Disease: Viral Gastroenteritis (aka: Stomach Flu)
Treatment: No treatment, but increased fluid consumption is important.
Alteration in Neuromuscular Function
Alteration in neural signal transduction or muscle responsiveness may result in altered bowel function.
Caused by: abdominal surgery, electrolyte imbalance, etc.
Disease: Paralysis-induced bowel malfunction
Treatment: Suppositories, healthy diet, etc.
Alteration in Patency
Bowel obstruction that blocks the intestinal lumen, thus preventing fecal movement.
Caused by: tumor, impacted feces, etc.
Disease: Colon Cancer
Treatment: chemotherapy, surgery, etc.
