Past Perfect
Used for:
For actions that happened before past event
In reported
In if (conditional) sentences
Form:

Examples:
Had you heard the news?
The film had already begun when we arrive to the cinema
Maria didn't want to see film because she hadn't read the book yet
When we want to talk about an action that happened before a past event, we often use the past perfect.
Past Simple
The Past Simple is used to talk about actions or situations in the past
Form:
With regular verbs: Infinitive + ed
With irregular verbs: 2nd column of the irregular verbs
Examples:
She didn't play with a ball
Did she played with the ball?
She played with a ball
