- - - - Cerebrum: is divided in to two halves by the longitudinal fissure. Each hemisphere is subdivided into five functional areas: frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and the insula.
        
        The outer surface of the cerebrum is covered in structures called sulci and gyri. Sulci: are small indentations of brain tissue. Gyri: are the raised bumps on the surface created by the gyri. The central sulcus separates the frontal and parietal lobes into the primary motor area (anterior) and the primary sensory area (posterior).
        
        Frontal lobe: area involved with motor functions, concentration, decision making, planning, and personality.
        
        Parietal lobe: area involved in general sensory functions.
        
        Occipital lobe: area of the cerebrum that processes visual information and stores visual memories.
        
        Temporal lobe: area of the cerebrum responsible for processing the sense of hearing and smell.
        
        Insula: area involved with memory and interpretation of taste.
      - Diencephalon is located in the middle of the brain, deep to the cerebrum. Its main structures are: fornix, hypothalamus, intermediate mass of the thalamus, pineal gland, pituitary gland, thalamus, and corpus callosum.
      - Brainstem is inferior to the diencephalon and the cerebrum. It has three regions: midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
        
        Medulla oblongata: region with many functions, including GI funtions, receptors for strech sensations, and cardiac & breathing control centers.
        
        Midbrain: location of the corpora quadrigemina and regulation of eye movement.
        
        Pons: acts as a bridge and relays information between the medulla oblongata and higher brain regions.
      - Cerebellum is located inferior to the occipital lobe. Its major function is to regulate motor movements and assist with equilibrium. Its major structures include: arbor vitae, cerebellar hemispheres, and vermis.
      - The meninges are three protective membranes that cover the brain: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.
