William keeping control
Feudal System
• Ensured William had control over his subjects and could raise an army.
• King- Nobles/Bishops- Knights- Peasants
• Everyone was answerable to the King.
. Dealt with revolts and rebellions
• ‘Harrying of the North’
• Some nobles rebelled and took the city of York.
• William responded by laying waste to a huge area of land.
• This sent a clear message to others thinking about rebelling
Domesday Book
• A survey of the whole country.
• Wanted to know:
▪ How many soldiers he could recruit
▪ How much he could tax people
▪ Who owned what land
▪ Ensure no nobles were too powerful

1) Leadership

Shared plans with his officers
Very popular and inspired loyalty
Able to operate independently and effectively in the heat of battle.
Ensured his men were well trained
2) Bravery
o Always led from the front. HMS Victory was the leading ship at Trafalgar.
o High risk-high reward tactics
o Injuries- continued even after major injuries.
➢ 1794- Corsica- lost the sight in one eye
➢ 1797- Tenerife- lost his right arm. Only just survivedtourniquet.
o Hugely patriotic. Last words “Thank God, I have done my duty
