Manufacturing Techniques
The 6 r's
Reuse
Could the product be used in a different way once its current use has expired? Could it be disassembled so that its materials and components could be reused in other products?
-
Rethink
How can the design of the product be changed so that it is less harmful to the environment? Can a better way to solve the problem be found?
Refuse
Should the product be produced if it is not sustainably designed? Is the packaging necessary or can it be removed?
Reduce
How can the number of materials and components used in the product be reduced? Is the product itself
necessary?
Recycle
Is the product made using Recycled materials? Could the materials be recycled once the product is no longer useful?

Production Aids: Improving
quality, accuracy and speed
of manufacture

-
To achieve accuracy and precision of production, supporting tools, known as production aids, are often required.
The main production aids used in Design and Technology applications are jigs, templates and patterns.
Jigs, templates and patterns are often used when batch producing products.
The increase in the use of computer-aided manufacture (CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) equipment means that jigs, templates and patterns are not as widely used as they once were, but they are still important aids when manufacturing by hand
