The Concept Of Place
-
Place is more than just location: A place can be thought of as a location which could be plotted on a map or defined by a grid reference. But this doesn't tell us anything about that place.
Place: Its location, the physical characteristics of the landscape, the human characteristics, all the things that flow in and out of that place and the sense of place.
Apart from location, all aspects of places and the meanings they have are constantly changing: The physical characteristics of a place can change over long time scales or short time scales, the human characteristics of a place can change over whole or short life times/time scales, the flows in and out of a place change and the sense of place individuals or groups have may change.
-
People can have a sense of place for experienced or media places: People can have a sense of place for places they've been to, and places they haven't been to.
Media places are places that people have not been to, but have created a sense of place for through their depiction in media.
A person's sense of a media place can be very different to the lived experience of the same place - this is because the media may present a place in a particular way and for a particular purpose.
Experienced places are places that people have spent time in. When a person visits or lives in a place their experiences, such as the things they see and the people they meet, shape their sense of that place.
