Westminster system
This is Australias parliamentary system, it is based on the U.K system located in Westminster. It consists of 2 chamber the upper house which is also named the Senate and the lower house known as The House of Representatives

Rights and Responsibilities
Rights: things in a comunity your allowed to do
Responsibilities: things in a community you have to do
Australias political system
The political system today in Australia is sat out in a document called the Australian Constitution which was commended on the 1st of Janruary 1901
The parliament consists of 2 houses, the lower house(House of Reps) and the upper house(Senate)
Political Parties
Political parties stand to represent what they believe in
Main Australian parties are Liberal and Labour
Laws
Non-Legal laws
Rules or regulations imposed upon a specific group, school, families or sporting clubs. These help to establish behaviour and helps everyone to work together in a cooperative manner
Legal laws
They exist to regulate behaviour. They may be changed by law making bodies eg. Parliaments, Councils, Judges and courts. They are enforced by police and courts, may receive a punishment (sanction) commonly a fine or time in prison
Why we have laws
To establish boundaries of acceptable behaviour, to help people treat each other equally and with respect. To not disturb or violate the rights of others or threaten peace

Courts in Australias state and territory are arranged in a hierachy ranked from lowest to highest based on the seriousness of cases that occur
The lowest court in each state and territory is the magistrates court which deal with minor cases which are commonly speeding and drunk driving
The highest court is the supreme court in each state and territory this deals with the most serious cases
