Strategic Planning
Definition
process by which top management determines overall organisational purposes and objectives and how they are achieved
link with HR planning
HR planning is supposed to align the HR process (recruitment and selection of key types of employers, job specification, training and retention policies) to the overall strategic vision of the organisation
Importance
optimise the use of resources and/or making them more flexible, acquiring and nurturing skills that take time to develop, identifying potential problems and minimising the chances of making a bad decision
benefits the organisation as it involves understanding the present in order to confront the future, challenging assumptions and liberating thinking, making explicit decisions that can later be challenged, standing back and providing an overview and ensuring that long-term thinking is not driven out by short-term focus.
Definition
matching the internal and external supply of people with the openings the organisation expects to have over a given time frame
Purpose
lay out the employer’s projected workforce and skills gaps, as well as staffing plans for filling these gaps
