What is an atom?
Location
-
Even though molecules also make up everything, atoms make up molecules, therefore they are the smallest unit.
-
Forming a molecule:
EXAMPLE: an oxygen atom by itself, only has 6 electrons in its outer shell, when it can have 8. Oxygen atoms are constantly looking for 2 more electrons to fill their outer shell. A hydrogen atom, which only has one electron in it's shell when it can have 2, is also looking for another electron. So if the oxygen atom bonds with 2 hydrogen atoms, a molecule is created: water.
There are different types of atoms. Different types have different amounts of electrons and different limits for how many electrons they can have inside their shell. Molecules are formed when multiple atoms who both are searching for electrons, bond, and share their electrons.
Parts of an atom
Nucleus (center of atom)
-
Neutrons (neutral, no charge)
Nucleus is positively charged; if neutrons=0 (as in 0 charge) and protons=+1, than neutrons and protons together are still positive: 0+1=1. (There is equal amount of neutrons as protons in nucleus.)

Name meaning
Atom is a Greek word, meaning indivisible.
