Impacts of Digital Technology
E-Waste
Older, outdated models and devices are discarded as there are newer models and devices that people would rather have
These often end up at landfill where toxic chemicals and materials from the technology pollute the surrounding area
Sustainability
There is much technology that cannot be recycled fully
This means that materials are unable to be reused and are wasted- making it unsustainable as eventually these resources will run out
Recycling
Reduce
Keep technology for longer rather than replacing it every few years in favor of new technology
Reuse
Reuse old or parts of old technology
Recycle
Use parts of other technology to produce or repair newer technology- take the camera off of one phone to be used for another
Use recyclable materials wherever possible to do so
Energy
Lots of energy is used to produce technology and transport it to be sold
Lots of energy is also used to use technology- both to power the technology but also to maintain a suitable environment to be used in (for example, computers need to be kept cool to prevent over heating)
Lots of energy is also used with companies such as Netflix which is required to offer a 24 hour services to its consumers
Data Centres
These are large facilities used to house a companies IT operations and equipment
These require a lot of energy to run and cool (etc.) as well as space required to build the facility
Monitoring
We can use satellites, sensors and weather stations to monitor the Earth and habitats
As a result of this monitoring, we can keep an eye on our impacts that the technology creates and reduce our impacts as a result of this
