Impacts of Digital Technology
E-waste
Equipment can become outdated and therefore it is discarded.
It then ends up in landfills where the toxic chemicals inside them leak into the earth and through run off can end up in other places. (leachate)
Sustainability
This means the materials are wasted
A lot of parts are not recyclable meaning manufacturing each part slowly eats in to the limited source that is there.
Recycling
REUSE: Use parts from older technology
RECYCLE: Use parts for repairs rather than throwing them away. This reduces the amount of waste that will end up in landfills.
REDUCE: Use older technology for longer rather than replacing it too often when it isn't truly needed.
Energy
Energy is consumed to produce the technology
Lots is used to power it
Transportation also costs energy
Maintaining suitable environments for it to work in. (Keep computers from overheating)
Data centres
Large buildings/ facilities used to store a companies IT equipment and operations.
Takes a lot of energy to maintain the equipment and also a lot to run (why they are situated in Norway)
Very large and are therefore expensive to make
Monitoring
Satalites that use solar energy can moniter and detect changes in the earth and therefore we can see our effects as we will then be well aware of what these impacts are.
