Natural World What is an Atom Video
How big are Atoms?
Very small.
You can only see them under a special microscope.
Atom Parts
If you get a small part of something that can't be cut further, it is called indivisible.
It is an atom.
There are two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen in each molecule of water.
Atom Parts
Electrons can't run away because the positively charged protons keep them pulled towards them.
Atoms have a nucleus.
The nucleus of an atom is positively charged due to protons.
The nucleus is made of protons and neutrons.
In each atom, there is the same number of electrons, protons, and neutrons.
Protons carry a positive electric charge, neutrons don't carry an electric charge, and electrons carry a negative electric charge.
Orbiting around the nucleus are electrons.
The total negative charge of the electrons is equal to the total positive charge of the protons in the nucleus, so the total of an atom is neutral.
The positive charge of the protons is neutrally charged by the negative charge of the electrons.
How Atoms Bond Together to Form a Molecule
Electrons keep moving in shells outside the nucleus, each shell contains a fixed number of electrons
The atoms in the outermost shell of an electron are called valence electrons.
Atoms always keep trying to fill their shells.
Oxygen Atom
In the second shell, it can hold up to eight electrons, but it only has six there.
It is always looking for electrons to fill the extra space.
Hydrogen atom
It only has one electron in its outer shell, but can hold two.
The oxygen atom bonds with two hydrogen atoms to fill its valence shell by sharing one electron with each hydrogen atom.
They become water molecules.
Atoms and Molecules: How are they related?
Everything is made up of atoms.
Everything is made up of molecules.
Molecules are made of atoms.
When atoms join together, they form a molecule.
When molecules form together, they form a thing.
Everything is made up of molecules, molecules are made up of atoms, so atoms are the smallest unit of everything.
Ex: Sentences are made up of words, words are made up of letters, so letters are the smallest units of a sentence.
