- - - - When Esperanza is working at her first job, she is forcibly kissed by an older man. He steals her first kiss from her against her will.
    - - When Esperanza is friends with Sally, she is left behind as Sally goes to sleep with the boys. She is left and taken advantage of by a boy and she calls out for Sally, asking why she would leave her.
- - - - Piri's sexuality
        
        Piri is a complicated character. One instance where he breaks gender traditions is when he is with all his friends and they take turns having sex with a man. They do this yet continue to use slurs and claim they are straight. This night later affects him in jail when he sees these men establish jail relationships.
    - - The relationship of Oscar and Yunior
        
        The relationship between Oscar and Yunior has many traits where they try and be "more like a man". Yunior many times tries to get Oscar to stop playing his "lame" games, watching his anime shows, and tries to get him to work out and hang out with the boys. This shows how afraid Yunior is of not being "man enough" and feels the need to associate with people who are also like him.
  - - - Identity of Esperanza
        
        Esperanza talks many times about being a girl. She dresses up in heels and wants to hang out with boys. It isn't until after these ideas and actions that she is able to see how rough being a female is and the abuse that can come with it.
    - - The relationship between Beli and Lola
        
        One of the most prominent moments in Beli and Lola's relationship on femaleness was when Lola cuts her hair. Beli is furious because she believes she now looks like a man, showing how Beli only believes in the two genders.
    - - In the music video for "Soy Yo", we see a younger girl of color breaking a gender tradition by challenging two groups of men, one playing basketball and the others having a dance competition.
  - - - This article talked about how the use of "LatinX" hid gender neutrality and lead to gender blind sexism. An example is that by using the "X", it takes away the fact for those who are transgender to be able to say which gender they identify by.
    - - One of the arguments my group made in class was about our narrators sexuality. He talks about obsessed he was with Sally but we argued that he is actually in love with Alex. He talks more about Alex, follow him everywhere, and when it comes to Sally, he only saw her when he was with Alex or Alex sent her.
    - - In this story, we see the narrator recount all of the people they have been intimate over the years. What is important to note is that they mention both women and men. One thing I also found important was that the narrator mentioned in one experience how she had been "craving" a woman.
- - - - Lola is a character of resistance. She goes against the norm of a Dominican female and pursues her own individual passions. This is like when she runs away and when she cuts off all of her hair just to make a statement to her mom.
  - - - Lizet resists against the norm of her family by going to college. Her family resents her for this. She continues to resist further when she takes an internship across the country even though her family wanted to hold her back and keep her in Miami to help them.
    - - Loudres has a whole storyline based off of resisting. She is shown to be an advocate for Ariel being able to stay in America and she is shown resisting when he is taken away and she continues to advocate for him.
- - - - Oscar is mentioned in the beginning to have been made fun of by his uncle. This constant picking on to him leads towards his low self esteem.
    - - Lola has a problem with her and Oscar's mother Beli. The two are constantly fighting and they seem to place the blame on each other. This leads to a strained relationship where it gets to the point that Lola runs away from home.
    - - Beli grew up as a lost child and as an orphan. She was said to have been found with burns all over her due to the abuse that she faced in her "adopted" household. It was so bad to the point she doesn't discuss it with anyone.
  - - - This mother daughter duo has a very strained relationship throughout the novel. Lizet constantly feels the needs to be someone who her mom is proud of yet her mom is more interested in advocating than a relationship with her daughter.
    - - These sisters seem as though they used to have a good relationship until Lizet went away for college and Leidy feels as though she betrayed their family by leaving her alone with their "crazy" mother.
