23 year old male paitent demonstrating severe face and arm muscle spasms was brought to emergency department by brother. Patient can hardly speak, so you try to get information from brother. Patient has many tattoos, including a fresh one on his shoulder, brother states paitent just got that one yesterday and that the tattoo parlor was "sketchy." Blood tests are ordered. Lab tests show he was infected with Clostridium tetani, a common bacteriumfound in soil which can be transmitted by using dirty needles. Find out patient was never vaccinated against this bacterium. Clostridium produces a toxin that affects neurons and thier ability to release neurotransmitters.
